Summer is a great time to explore different juices and this Spicy Watermelon Juice is the perfect recipe to beat the heat with the seasonal fruit.
My boys love fruits as is and it is so hard to find fruit to juice. I am not complaining as eating fruits is a great way to include dietary fiber in our diet. But there are days when it is so hot that I love to have some juice instead of fruit.
Last week, when I was shopping with my son, we saw some beautiful watermelons in the market. My son insisted that he know how to pick the perfect sweet watermelon (and I believed my 15-year-old). So we bring home a watermelon, after a lot of testing and reading.
I open it and it looked just perfect inside. We take a bite and that is when realized that we won't be eating it as a fruit. It had no sweetness but was very juicy. That is how this juice came into making with a couple of trials and errors to perfect the flavor.
Why make this recipe
Watermelon is a great fruit to use for juicing. It is refreshing and very sweet and does not need much sugar most of the time when juiced.
This recipe also is a great option to use watermelon that is not too sweet to eat on its own. I have had occasions when the whole watermelon that I bought had little or no flavor at all. This recipe is just perfect for those watermelons.
Make this watermelon juice when you have an excess of fruit. At the peak of summer, we get huge watermelons for a very affordable price and that is the best time to enjoy this drink.
It is a non-alcoholic recipe. Kids and adults can both enjoy this watermelon juice on a hot day.
Ingredients and substitutes
Watermelon - We need some watermelon to make this spicy and tangy juice. A sweet watermelon is perfect, but if the watermelon is not too sweet, we can add some sugar for flavor.
I have added some Indian spices to the recipe which makes it very delicious and different from the other juices. It has red chili powder to make it spicy and has chaat masala to give it the next-level flavor. You could skip the chaat masala and use some black salt instead.
Other than that I have added some mint leaves from my backyard.
Salt is an important ingredient in the drink and I would not skip it.
Step by Step Process to make Watermelon Juice
- Chop the watermelon into cubes and add it to the blender jar. I made individual servings of the juice. (step 1)
- Add mint leaves to the blender. (step 2)
- Add the sugar (if needed) (step 3) along with red chili powder (step 4), Chaat Masala (step 5), and salt (step 6).
- Add ice cubes if using to the blender jar along with the rest of the ingredients. (step 7)
- Blend everything together until it is smooth. (step 8)
- Strain the juice using a strainer (steps 9 & 10). This step is optional and you can choose to leave the drink as is.
- Pour the watermelon juice on top of the ice and garnish with a piece of mint and serve cold (step 11 & 12).
Expert Tips
- Any kind of watermelon can be used for the recipe. If the fruit is not too sweet, we can add some sugar for flavor.
- This is a great recipe to make with excess watermelon. If you don't want to make the drink right away, freeze the excess watermelon cubes and then use it when needed.
- Spices are optional and can be adjusted based on your liking.
- Mint can be replaced with cilantro for a different flavor.
- You can choose to strain the pulp or leave it intact. I strained the pulp as my boys liked it that way.
